Rochester New York

The Upstate New York PowerShell User Group meets in Rochester and Syracuse to provide a forum for learning and discussing PowerShell from the perspective of Developers and System Administrators. The Rochester group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Rochester New Horizons office: 50 Methodist Hill Drive, Suite 50, Rochester, NY (directions).

Great Book Discounts This Week!

Did you know that the O'Reilly store sells books by other publishers?  They sell MS Press, No Starch Press, Pragmatic Bookshelf, and more. Why do I mention this? Because they have a discount for our user group members:  just use the code DSUG when you're checking out to get 40% off of any book, and 50% off eBooks (which they make available in ePub, PDF, and MOBI formats).

Microsoft User Group Survey

Microsoft is asking us to pass on a link to this survey to our user group participants.  It closes June 25th, so don't take too long before you fill it out.

May 19 in Rochester - PowerShell in practice: scripting guidelines and best practices

This month in Rochester will be a continuation, in a sense, of the main discussion from last month's Script Club...

Windows PowerShell 2.0: A Developers Introduction

I will be presenting to the CNY .NET Developers Group on May 5th, 2010 at 6:00PM. The topic of my talk is Windows PowerShell 2.0, but from a developer perspective.   You can register and check out the abstract at http://www.cnydevelopers.net/.  I hope to see you there.

April 21st is Script Club in Rochester!

Well, it's been a while since we had a Script Club meeting in Rochester, so after talking to the folks who showed up on St. Patrick's Day, and our scheduled presenters for April, I've decided to move those presentations back, and have another Script Club this month!

Rochester's St. Patrick's Day User Group!

Our March user group meeting is on the 17th: St. Patrick's Day!

We will, as usual, have two presentations. But this month they will both be focused on scripting in PowerShell --

The beginner presentation covers roughly chapters 4-6 of PowerShell in Action: Operators, Expressions, Variables and flow control in PowerShell. We'll cover each of these with examples and lists, and give you a chance to ask questions and interact.

Would you attend a PowerShell virtual (LiveMeeting) brown-bag (lunch) meeting without pre-set topics?

February 24th in Rochester: PowerShell Command-Line Intro and Powershell 2 Programming APIs

With apologies for waiting so late to make the final official post ...

As we've stated previously, our February meeting will be the FOURTH Wednesday of the month (NEXT Wednesday) instead of the third. We will be meeting at New Horizons as usual at 6pm for Pizza or 6:30 for the start of the session.

Our sessions this week will be an Introduction to the PowerShell command line (based on three chapters from Bruce Payette's PowerShell In Action book), followed by an overview of the new PowerShell 2.0 APIs.

Syracuse PowerShell User Group 2/10

Sorry for not formally announcing this earlier, but I'm still planning on a meeting of the Syracuse chapter of the Upstate NY PowerShell User Group at the usual New Horizons location in DeWitt. We'll start promptly at 6:00. Remember the building locks at 6:00 so please try to arrive a little earlier. If you think you'll be a little late, email me and we can make arrangements.

I'll talk a little about remoting in PowerShell 2.0 and then we'll take a look at what ever PowerShell script projects you're working on. Come ready to learn and bring a friend.

More Features on PowerShellGroup.org

I just wanted to let you all know ... if you have a user group or script club hosted here on PowerShellGroup.org, you can create forum threads (like this one) for discussion!

We can also set up private group email discussion/announcement lists for you, with an address @PowerShellGroup.org (eg: Rochester@PowerShellGroup.org or Tampa@PowerShellGroup.org, etc.)

We also allow attachments on posts, but there's unfortunately a size limit imposed by our PHP server, so if you need to upload larger files, we can set up your administrator with an FTP account so you can upload larger files like user group presentations, recordings, etc.

January 20th in Rochester -- Introductory PowerShell

Post Event Edit: We had a good meeting, and I wanted to share some of the MSDN links which contained much of the content from the presentations (as well as attaching the presentation decks -- although I realize they are so minimal that without the presentation text they serve only as a reminder):

Syracuse PowerShell Users Group Script Club 1/13/2010

We will have a Script Club meeting on January 13th, 2010. Bring your PowerShell script, project and questions. Everyone scripts and everyone contributes. We may not answer all your questions but you should leave knowing more than you did at the beginning of the evening. Bring a friend and share the wealth! Anyone within driving distance of Syracuse, NY is welcome to attend.

Meeting will begin at 6:00PM SHARP. The New Horizons building in DeWitt automatically locks at 6:00 PM so please arrive in time.

Syracuse PowerShell Users Re-Unite!

I'll be starting up PowerShell User Group meetings in Syracuse again beginning on Wed. January 13, 2010. We’ll be meeting at New Horizons in DeWitt (6711 Towpath Road, Suite 100, East Syracuse, NY 13057). We’ll start at 6:00PM sharp so please try to arrive a little early. The building locks at 6:00PM so try to arrive before then. If you come late and make enough noise, I think someone will let you in. I hope.
