We meet the second Monday of every month at 6pm in the Microsoft office on 6th Ave. RSVP is required for each meeting 36 hours in advance.

If a meeting is not listed on this site it means we are on hiatus.  We do this in the Summer and we will occasionally miss a month here or there.

NYC Meeting 1/9/11 - Oisin Grehan - PowerShell Providers

If you're deep into PowerShell, there is no way you have not heard his name, Oisin Grehan.  PowerShell MVP from Montreal, developer for PSCX, blogger, contributer to NuGet, and the developer for the PowerShell Script Provider will bring us an evening that is deep in PowerShell providers.

Providers - you know what they are, but do you know it all?  Find out where and how providers are used without your knowledge, understand their design and internals, and learn how you can use the PowerShell Script provider to create your own providers.

Of course it's going to be impossible to have a meeting without discussing PowerShell 3.0 - you can expect to hear what Oisin has to say about the new features.

NYC Meeting - 10/10/2011 - Mongo DB and PowerShell 3.0 - Justin Dearing

This is going to be a huge meeting!!!  We're breaking format so that we have enough time for all of the killer content.

The night will kick off with Rich Prescott and Tome Tanasovski doing a live demo and talk about what's new in both the CTP of PowerShell 3.0 as well as the PowerShell 3.0 and modules that shipped with Windows 8.  We will have a few laptops loaded with Windows 8 and PowerShell 3.0 so that you can see the interface and ask questions.

Our headliner, Justin Dearing, will lead a presentation into the world of Mongo DB, a document oriented database that has enterprise features like automatic partitioning (sharding) across multiple servers.  Mongo DB is a schema-less non-relational database. Powershell is a dynamic scripting language that gives you all the power of COM, WMI and the .NET framework. Thanks to the official 10gen C# driver, you can combine the two.  Come see how you can use PowerShell to consume and send data to a modern scalable and flexible document-based database system that is used by Foursquare, Craigslist, Source Forge, Etsy, and Disney.

Justin Dearing has been involved in the IT industry since 2002. In his career, he has served on both the operations and development sides of the house. He has made small improvements to windows support of the MongoDB core server. He was also given early access to the MongoDB C# driver, which he thoroughly tested by writing one of the first production websites to use it, contributing a few patches along the way. His interests soon turned to automating his servers with Powershell, which lead to him combining MongoDB and Powershell for pure awesomeness.

Justin is a blogger, .Net developer, and a contributer to Just a Programmer.  Justin is a well known #PowerShell twitter-er who goes by the handle @zippy1981.

NYC Meeting - 9/12/2011 - Tome Tanasovski - Advanced Functions and Modules

The Summer was long and hot, but it's PowerShell time again!  We're back!

Advanced functions and modules enable you to make code that can be used time and time again in flexible ways.  Come find out how it works from the author of the PowerShell Bible.  Cmdlet binding, Parameter Sets, psd1/psm1 files, parameter validation, pipelinability and much much more.  We're going to dive deep into what is possible, and Tome will provide some examples of templates he uses to create common cmdlet types like ConvertTo- cmdlets.

Additionally, we have a ton of prizes and swag, so we're going to do our first PowerShell live-action scripting games.  Bring a laptop to join in the fun, but don't feel obligated.  There will be plenty to learn as we see how people tackle a few quickfire challenges.  There is one goal for this contest, PURE SPEED!  The fastest script writer who meets the requirements of the challenge wins!

10/10 - Justin Dearing - MongoDB
11/14 - Doug Finke, MVP - ShowUI
12/12 - Oisin Grehan, MVP - Unknown topic (hopefully there will be new things to talk about after the BUILD conference - perhaps windows 8?)
