New York City

We are a group of developers, admins, and Powershell enthusiasts who live in or near New York City. Our goal is to develop a strong community of people within the New York area to share and promote the transfer of Powershell knowledge. We meet the second Monday of every month at 6pm in the Microsoft office on 6th Ave. RSVP is required for each meeting 36 hours in advance.
If a meeting is not listed on this site it means we are on hiatus. We do this in the Summer and we will occasionally miss a month here or there.

NYC Meeting - 12/10/2012 - Tome Tanasovski - Regular Expressions
By popular demand, Tome (MVP and author of the PowerShell Bible) will be presenting the regular expression talk he gave to us back in 2010. This is a great opportunity to see, learn, and understand regular expressions.
Regular Expressions have been employed by every serious scripting language for the past 15 years. PowerShell’s adoption and implementation of Regular Expressions has ensured that it is taken seriously by serious scripters. The presentation will explore the history and syntax of regular expressions. It will give a deep dive into the PowerShell cmdlets that use Regular Expressions as well as the .NET native methods that can be invoked using PowerShell. It will give a detailed understanding of the internals of Microsoft’s implementation of Regular Expressions and how it differs from other languages. Real-world scenarios for using regular expressions will be explored.

November cancelled due to Sandy
It looks like we need to take November off. There are still no L trains running so Tome cannot get to the Microsoft office to give the requested talk about regular expressions. Also, with no one working downtown it hardly seems like we'll get much of a turnout. Our next meeting will be December 10th. We'll have RSVP information up in the next week or so.

NYC Meeting - 9/10/2012 - Tome Tanasovski - PowerShell 3.0 and CIM
Summer is over and school is back in session. Even better yet, we're back in session! Time for some PowerShell conversation, discussion, and general awesomeness. We've discussed it before, but it's officially released: PowerShell 3.0
PowerShell 3.0 and the CIM cmdlets
This month we are happy to have Tome Tanasovski to discuss PowerShell 3.0 and the CIM cmdlets. CIM is the new standard that is used to connect to WMI. With DCOM disabled by default on Windows Server 2012, it's extremely important to learn the new management story. We'll be digging into this new standard along with a whole slew of new PowerShell 3.0 cmdlets and features

NYC PowerShell User Group - Tome Tanasovski - TEC Preview: Corporate Module Repository & PINVOKE
Join us as we wish our leader and the author of the PowerShell Bible, Tome Tanasovski, a great trip to the PowerShell Deep Dive at the Experts Conference in San Diego. He will be delivering both presentations that he will be giving at the event to our group.
Creating a Corporate PowerShell Module Repository
PowerShell modules are the easiest way to create standardized reusable sets of functions within your organization. This session will discuss what works and what doesn’t work when designing a PowerShell module repository on your corporate network. You will walk away knowing the technical challenges that were encountered as well as the ideological possibilities that were discussed and decided upon while creating a module repository for an enterprise financial institution on Wall Street.
PowerShell and Pinvoke - When Old APIs Save the Day
The ability to port pinvoke code into PowerShell functions is an extremely powerful technique that can save the day when simple .NET code is not enough. This presentation will give an overview of what the native Windows DLLs can do, and it will give real-world cases why you would need to turn to this technique. Porting pinvoke code to PowerShell will be demonstrated with a focus on the common pitfalls you will encounter and the tricks needed to handle them..

NYC Meeting - 10/10/2011 - Mongo DB and PowerShell 3.0 - Justin Dearing
This is going to be a huge meeting!!! We're breaking format so that we have enough time for all of the killer content.
The night will kick off with Rich Prescott and Tome Tanasovski doing a live demo and talk about what's new in both the CTP of PowerShell 3.0 as well as the PowerShell 3.0 and modules that shipped with Windows 8. We will have a few laptops loaded with Windows 8 and PowerShell 3.0 so that you can see the interface and ask questions.
Our headliner, Justin Dearing, will lead a presentation into the world of Mongo DB, a document oriented database that has enterprise features like automatic partitioning (sharding) across multiple servers. Mongo DB is a schema-less non-relational database. Powershell is a dynamic scripting language that gives you all the power of COM, WMI and the .NET framework. Thanks to the official 10gen C# driver, you can combine the two. Come see how you can use PowerShell to consume and send data to a modern scalable and flexible document-based database system that is used by Foursquare, Craigslist, Source Forge, Etsy, and Disney.
Justin Dearing has been involved in the IT industry since 2002. In his career, he has served on both the operations and development sides of the house. He has made small improvements to windows support of the MongoDB core server. He was also given early access to the MongoDB C# driver, which he thoroughly tested by writing one of the first production websites to use it, contributing a few patches along the way. His interests soon turned to automating his servers with Powershell, which lead to him combining MongoDB and Powershell for pure awesomeness.
Justin is a blogger, .Net developer, and a contributer to Just a Programmer. Justin is a well known #PowerShell twitter-er who goes by the handle @zippy1981.

NYC Meeting - 9/12/2011 - Tome Tanasovski - Advanced Functions and Modules
The Summer was long and hot, but it's PowerShell time again! We're back!
Advanced functions and modules enable you to make code that can be used time and time again in flexible ways. Come find out how it works from the author of the PowerShell Bible. Cmdlet binding, Parameter Sets, psd1/psm1 files, parameter validation, pipelinability and much much more. We're going to dive deep into what is possible, and Tome will provide some examples of templates he uses to create common cmdlet types like ConvertTo- cmdlets.
Additionally, we have a ton of prizes and swag, so we're going to do our first PowerShell live-action scripting games. Bring a laptop to join in the fun, but don't feel obligated. There will be plenty to learn as we see how people tackle a few quickfire challenges. There is one goal for this contest, PURE SPEED! The fastest script writer who meets the requirements of the challenge wins!
