December Virtual Meeting (Dec 5, 2013)

Based on the feedback from the folks who have shown up at the Rochester in-person meetings the last two months, in December we're going to try meeting virtually!

The meeting will still be held at 6:30PM Eastern on December 5th (the first Thursday), but we will meet on Google+ Hangouts or Microsoft Lync (going to do some testing this week to see which).

We will see how that goes (and how everyone feels about it), but I'm tentatively planning on meeting the same way in January on the 2nd

Meeting Date:
Thursday, December 5, 2013 - 18:30 - 20:30

Location

NYC PowerShell User Group 11/11/13 - Open Forum - Tome Tanasovski

Open Forum and lightning rounds.  A few of you have expressed interest in speaking this evening.  The more the merrier.  Come and bring something to share.  5-15 minutes to talk about a project, shed light on a challenge you are facing, or share your favorite PowerShell-focused library or technology.  The last time we did this was a huge success!

Additionally, if our lightning rounds don't have enough content, our founder, Tome Tanasovski, will be on hand to talk about any topic you wish to discuss.

Tome is an executive for a market-leading global financial services firm in New York City where he focuses on automation, private cloud, and distributed computing. He is the founder and leader of the New York City PowerShell User group, a blogger, and speaks regularly at conferences and user groups. In 2011 he became a cofounder of the NYC Techstravaganza, coauthored the Windows PowerShell Bible, and received the title of Honorary Scripting Guy from the Hey Scripting Guy! blog. Tome has also received the MVP award from Microsoft for the last three years in Windows PowerShell.

NYC PowerShell User Group 10/14 - Steven Murawski - DevOps at Stack Overflow / Stack Exchange

Hot meeting in October!  Steve Murawski is in town, and he will be giving us some amazing insight into how his company, Stack Exchange, is automating their massive plant of Linux and Windows servers.
Topic: DevOps At Stack Overflow / Stack Exchange
Speaker: Steven Murawski, MVP Recipient, PowerShell, Stack Overflow

Your guide in this session is Steven Murawski, sysadmin for Stack Exchange, hosts of the Q&A site most developers are familiar with Stack Overflow. Steven will share his experience working with developers inside Stack Exchange and contrast that with an other traditional environments. We'll take a peek at some of the tooling used to make Stack Overflow a high performing site. And we'll see an environment where: - developers can push new code to production with a minimum of fuss. - the environment is instrumented and a view is available for developers and sysadmins. - servers can be pulled out of rotation at a moments notice for patching and other maintenance. - new physical web servers can be in production in under 3 hours (if hardware was available and racked). If this sounds different from other environments you've worked in, or you are thinking, "How can I get me some of that?", join Steven for a whirlwind tour through a real-world DevOps environment.

What's New in PowerShell: October 10th in Rochester

We are kicking off the fall a little late this year, but October 10th we're going to start off with a "What's new in PowerShell?" session.
PowerShell 4 is shipping just barely a year after PowerShell 3, thanks to the release of Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 (it will be available for Windows 7/Server 2008 as well) and brings with it Desired State Configuration, which might just change the face of Windows system administration.

Meeting Date:
Thursday, October 10, 2013 - 18:00 - 20:30

Location

NYC PowerShell User Group - 9/9/2013 - Desired State Configuration and WMI Eventing

Our favorite time of year.  Time to kick off a new season of PowerShell chit chat in NYC!

Topic: Desired State Configuration (DSC)

PowerShell 4.0 is in public preview, and Desired State Configuration is the game-changing feature that has come out of it.  DSC is built on top of PowerShell and Remoting, and it provides a way to configure servers using configuration files natively in a similar fashion to how you can with Puppet and Chef.  Join Tome has he discusses what DSC is, how it is used, and how to create custom configurations using PowerShell scripts.  Whether you are a developer looking for new ways to deploy your code to Windows or an IT Pro who is responsible for managing the configurations of Windows servers, you will want to learn about how this new feature works.

Speaker: Tome Tanasovski

Tome is an engineer for a market-leading global financial services firm in New York City. He is the founder and leader of the New York City PowerShell User group, a blogger, and a regular contributor to Microsoft’s Windows PowerShell forum.
