NYC PowerShell UG Meeting - 6/16/2014 - Jeffrey Snover & Erin Chapple - Update on the Monad Manifesto

Jeffrey Snover, the man who probably needs no introduction for this crowd, will be here on June 16th, 2014 for a special session of the NYC PowerShell User Group. For those who don't know, Jeffrey is the creator of PowerShell! He is also a distinguished engineer and lead architect for Windows Server and System Center. He is only in town for two days and has graciously offered to give us some of his precious time.

Additionally, he is bringing Erin Chapple with him who many of you know from her years of service in Microsoft as a program manager for management and services on Windows Server (which included PowerShell!). Erin is now a partner group program manager in the Windows Server and System Center Division, where she leads the Cloud Infrastructure program management team. The Cloud Infrastructure Team delivers the core platform and administrative experiences necessary to minimize the cost and effort to deploy, manage, and operate Windows Server in a public or private cloud environments. Erin joined Microsoft in 1998 and has held several roles focused on delivering solutions for IT. Erin holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. In 2005, she completed a master's in Applied Behavioral Science from the Leadership Institute of Seattle. In 2007, the University of Washington recognized her with a 50th Anniversary Alumni Award for her work supporting women in technology. In 2012, Erin's peers at Microsoft presented her with the Leadership Advocacy Award for Women. Erin was recognized as one of ten "Microsoft Woman Worth Watching" on Mary-Jo Foley's ZDNet Blog.

Update on the Monad Manifesto - Where are we and what lies ahead?
Jeffrey will be discussing the thing that started it all, the Monad Manifesto. We'll hear first-hand what was the intention, where the product has succeeded, and where it failed over the past 12 years. This presentation has a strong focus on what lies ahead for the Windows PowerShell language.

Unfortunately, we're still pulling a room together in Microsoft so we're not sure how many will be allowed to attend. Register to reserve a spot as we will be using the order in which you register to determine the cut-off if we cannot get one of the larger rooms.

I just moved down to Charleston South Carolina and wanted to get in a powershell group to get more of an understand of it and to learn off of others.  When I looked on the site I saw that there was no group meeting in Charleston, so I wanted to see if I could start my own group here in Charleston.  I still go to college and have a year or so left until I graduate, but will still be staying in the area.  There are alot of opportunties here in Charleston since the IT growth has grown tremendous.

NYC PowerShell UG Meeting - 4/14/2014 - Tome Tanasovski - PowerShell Summit Sessions

This event will be hosted at the new office of Microsoft in Times Square!

We have quite the lineup in store.  Our founder and leader Tome Tanasovski will be presenting all three of the sessions that he will be presenting at the PowerShell Summit later this month.

Parallel Execution with PowerShell

For the hardcore scripter working in large enterprises or on time-sensitive scripts, it is important to understand what options are available to you in order to take advantage of all of the processing power on a machine. We'll explore what is built in to PowerShell, what is native to the .NET language, and a few other techniques that can help you turn your 8-hour script into a 30-minute script

Intro to GIT and GitHub

Git and Github are not Windows PowerShell, but they are essential to distributed development in today's day and age. Learn why there are so many github projects, how you can start your own project, and how you can contribute to existing projects. Whether you are an IT Pro or a developer, you should be using source control even if you are working alone. However, if you are working with a team of people who you want to enable as direct editors to your code, it is essential. Find out how easy it is to allow others to clone, modify, and either push changes or request that their changes get added to your code base using the git binaries and Windows PowerShell.

OData Extensions

The Odata extensions to IIS are one of the most overlooked features that are available in the Windows Server operating system. These extensions allow you a way to turn scripts and cmdlets into web services using only a few definition files. This feature enables Windows scripters to be able to expose their services into the dark holes where Linux, Unix, Perl, Python, Javascript, and Java live. This live demo will illustrate just how easy it is to enable, configure, and use this feature with focus on pitfalls you may encounter in the enterprise.

Tome is an executive for a market-leading global financial services firm in New York City where he focuses on automation, private cloud, and distributed computing. He is the founder and leader of the New York City PowerShell User group, a blogger, and speaks regularly at conferences and user groups. In 2011 he became a cofounder of the NYC Techstravaganza, coauthored the Windows PowerShell Bible, and received the title of Honorary Scripting Guy from the Hey Scripting Guy! blog. Tome has also received the MVP award from Microsoft for the last four years in Windows PowerShell.

Tome blogs at http://powertoe.wordpress.com and you can follow him at http://twitter.com/toenuff

April 3rd: Creating and Packaging Modules

This month's virtual user group presentation will be about creating and packaging PowerShell modules!

PowerShell MVP Joel Bennett (yes, that's me) will present about authoring PowerShell modules, including tips, tricks and best practices for writing modules and functions that work well together (and behave properly in the pipeline).

We will also take a look at the new PoshCode module packaging module: a powerful new way to distribute, install, and rely on dependencies between PowerShell modules.
